Several car brands have shown off automatic charging robots that can charge the car without the driver having to get out. None of the ventures has so far become a reality.
But possibly the idea can get new life. Hyundai is now developing an automatic charging robot for electric cars so that the driver does not have to get out and plug in the cord.
According to Hyundai, the charging robot must also work in bad weather and be able to handle various types of obstacles that may arise at the charging post. A camera identifies the charging port and the cable is connected. When charging is complete, the cable is removed and the charging door is closed.
- It will improve accessibility, especially for people with mobility impairments as charging cables are getting thicker and heavier to enable high-speed charging, says Dong Jin Hyun, head of Hyundai's robot lab.
It is not clear when the charging robot will become a reality, but Hyundai states that the technology should be available "in the near future".
